A Community Solution

By engaging with thousands of residents over three years, MOC worked with the community to identify needs as defined by residents as well as their vision for the Montbello community. The solution is the Montbello FreshLo Initiative and The FreshLo Hub, a grocery-anchored cultural arts center in the heart of the community.

A Community Vision

Healthy Food

Partnering with Family Tree Food Market, the FreshLo Hub’s 22,046 square-foot grocery store will provide healthy, affordable, and natural foods, including some locally-sourced produce from Montbello Urban Farm. Additionally, Family Tree Food Market will offer cooking and nutrition classes, and the business will create dozens of living-wage jobs. The FreshLo Hub is also at the heart of a walkable loop that connects the community to services, retail, and arts.

Equitable Economic Development

In addition to the Family Tree Food Market and the art space, the Hub will offer six small retail spaces for businesses owned by local entrepreneurs. Shops may offer products from local artisans and will create additional jobs for the project. A limited number of office spaces will also be available for rent to nonprofits that provide services to the community. In addition to nearly 100 jobs created by the retail and arts space, the commercial portion of the project will create over 100 construction jobs.

Affordability

Above the food market, theater and retail and office space will sit 97 units of affordable housing. Units will range in size from one- to three-bedroom and will be rented to residents in the 30% - 70% AMI qualifying range. With a variety of floor plans and sizes, the apartments will house 160 – 230 residents.

Cultural Arts & Connectivity

Partnering with the Colorado Black Arts Movement, a theater will become a community destination for the performing arts. The theater’s flexible design means the space will also serve as a community event space. Rehearsal and recital rooms will surround the theater, and spaces will be available for nonprofits and arts groups to provide classes for the community
